  1. Recycling/Garbage Collection/Composting.

Waste Management is one the fundamental responsibilities of any municipality.  The decision to move bins to the street, instead of using alleyways where possible, has not been a wise decision.  It is incredibly unsightly and problematic for some residents.   It can even pose a security risk as a receptacle left unattended on the street for an extended period may suggest an occupant is away.  With regards to the green bin program, this represents a huge expense with no effective benefit as many people already do their own composting.  There are better ways to spend $5.0 million.

  1. $1 million reduction to the Police budget.
This was a serious error and should be a higher priority than many of the other unproductive and largely symbolic expenditures the City wastes money on every year (see green bin program above). If fortunate be elected to serve on council, I would approve not only a restoration to previous levels but an increase of $2.0 million over the next 4 years.

  1. Masking Bylaw.

The Provincial Government has the mandate and the resources to govern public health, and the obvious risks that COVID-19 and its variants present, there shouldn’t be need for additional municipal laws in this regard.  Unfortunately, our education system seems to have left some gaps in

the public’s ability to make sound decisions under the stresses of a pandemic.  Therefore, if necessary, I would vote in favor of a mask bylaw for reasons of necessity rather than symbolic.

  1. Supervised Drug Consumption.

Currently, Lethbridge is one giant un-supervised drug consumption site, and this is not working well.   As one part of a comprehensive addiction mitigation strategy a supervised drug consumption site will help to limit the spread of disease, reduce overdoses and toxic poisonings, an provide an on-ramp to an addiction treatment program.  The logical place to put such a facility is inside the Lethbridge Shelter as this is where the need is greatest.   Needles should be provided but should not be allowed to leave the facility.

  1. Performing Arts Centre.
With so many unaddressed needs in our city right now, a luxury item such as the Performance Arts Centre should be put on the backburner. Instead, upgrades to the Enmax Centre would provide an economical stopgap and avoid the need to subsidize the operation while we get our house in order.

  2. The CIP

The City should not have proceeded with the CIP planning and approval knowing full well a new Mayor and Council would be installed shortly.  In short, they have acted in bad faith and voters need to keep this in mind when they go to the polls on October 18th

  1. Downtown Lethbridge

This area of the City has been sideswiped by a number of social and economic factors affecting municipalities of all sizes.  This includes urban growth, decentralization, and the digital economy.   Some of the changes I would support include free limited time parking, closing off some streets to create an outdoor mall, encouraging mixed use live/work condos, increasing policing, providing a day-use facility for homeless individuals away from the downtown area.  Also, by re-imaging Galt Gardens with a Muttart Conservatory-type of facility, where people can enjoy a tropical climate year-round, thereby bring more people to the downtown.
