5. Lethbridge trail alliance

Although I was previously unfamiliar with the LTA, I am pleased to learn about your initiative.

  1. The Oldman River area is a unique resource that is an enormous asset to Lethbridge and the surrounding areas. It should be developed in a responsible and sustainable manner for the benefit of the widest variety and volume of residents and visitors.
  2. By agreeing on a long-term vision for the area and establishing guidelines for future development we can achieve the ideal balance between natural and enhanced features.
  1. Towards this end we should examine the prospect for building a network of boardwalks throughout the area. This would allow access to people of all ages and abilities while protecting sensitive areas from threat and harm.   Allowing individuals, families, businesses, and organizations to sponsor these facilities with subtle engraving would help to create heritage while providing funding and commitment.
  1. Our first step should be to establish a steering committee responsible for overseeing the preservation and development of the coulees and river bottom. This committee would be tasked with community consultation and collecting a wide range of input from all prospective users.  Out of this consultation a list of priorities, standards, policies, and practices would be adopted to guide all future development.
  1. I see an increase in the number of current uses as well as the addition of recreational, educational and entertainment activities including parks, trails, camping, picnicking, historical, educational, and ecological appreciation. Having an outdoor interpretive theatre for “under-the-stars” edutainment would provide a truly valuable family activity.    I envision bicycle rentals, canoe and kayaking, and electrically powered personal mobility devices offered for rent as well.
  1. My only experience with a single-track trail system is hiking in Waterton Park and I love it. This could be an immense attraction for Lethbridge making it a destination feature for visitors and a quality-of-life amenity for residents.

If fortunate to be elected to Lethbridge City Council, I would lobby for the establishment of an Oldman River Preservation and Development Committee, and sitting on it, to coordinate with the LTA.
